Does this mean anything today?

As I sat down to begin watching Ken Burns’s latest series, The U.S. and the Holocaust, I was shocked by what I learned in the opening narration. Otto Frank, his wife, and two daughters were refused asylum in the United States at the beginning of the rise of Nazism in Germany in the early 1930’s. We turned away Anne Frank and her family.

The narration of the following frames included the opening, lesser known, lines of The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus. Everyone knows “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” – but we seem to have forgotten the earlier lines that now live on the home page of this blog.

I want to believe that the majority of Americans still find these words to be true, but a very vocal minority has sprung up. Since the “regime” of the Hair Force One, the man Stephen Colbert refuses to name, his followers (neo-Nazis) are emboldened to stand up for anything other than democracy and the principles on which this country was founded.

If you agree – and most people I consider to be friends do – please feel free to pass along a link to this post and encourage other who are like-minded to speak out.

It doesn’t have to be this way!

Is happiness possible in our current state?

Sitting with my cousin late yesterday afternoon – enjoying a Harp ale – we admitted to each other that we were not happy. Just a generalized idea of happiness that seems to be evading most intelligent human beings in 21st Century America…

So the question came up, “Is it possible to be aware of the world around you, all the bullshit that keeps disguising itself as “truth,” and feel any sense of contentment?” I’d love to know what you all think…
